New Book: PRC vs The Cathedral
I am very happy to announce the release of PRC vs The Cathedral, a new book that examines how the Publish-Review-Curate (PRC) model could reshape the future of academic publishing. This is a deeply personal reflection, drawing on years of working with pioneering projects like arXiv, MetaROR, Biophysics Colab, and NCRC, as well as countless conversations with practitioners across the scholarly ecosystem.
The book explores how PRC challenges entrenched power structures in academic publishing, transitioning from the "cathedral" of traditional journals to a "bazaar" of decentralized, community-driven collaboration. From the inefficiencies of slow journals to the revolutionary potential of preprints, PRC vs The Cathedral reflects on how these shifts could create a more inclusive, transparent, and dynamic scholarly communication landscape.
This release is Version 1, available exclusively as a PDF for now. In true PRC spirit, this book is a living work, open to your feedback, ideas, and contributions. Future versions (v1.x and beyond) will include EPUB, web, PDF, and print formats, incorporating revisions and potentially new chapters based on your input.
I would love your thoughts—on the ideas, the format, or anything else you’d like to share. If this resonates with you, please help spread the word. Share it with your networks, recommend it to colleagues, or just start a conversation about the possibilities of PRC.
